Mado & Tabouret by Kiyomi Burgin
Kiyomi Burgin has released many cute clothes and accessories with her twin Sachiko. For No. 20, I designed a sweater and a hat.
amirisu: Where did you get the inspiration for these two designs?
Kiyomi: I really like how it feels transparent when you knit mohair lace. If you look through the knitted fabric, it looks like you're looking through stained glass, so I thought, why not make a sweater with an actual window pattern! Mado was an experimental design, but I really like the finished piece.
Berets are back in fashion these days, and they're so cute! Tabouret was created with the idea of designing a simple rib knit. The pom-poms make it look like a traditional Scottish hat.
amirisu: If you were to knit another one, what color would it be?
Kiyomi: I'd like to knit with colors like windows at night. I want the main color to be dark gray, and the window to be woven with light yellow and lavender to create a window that looks like it is illuminated by a lamp and a TV.
For Tabouret, I think it would be better if the main color is Black Truffle and the contrast is oatmeal. After all, just flip the color of the sample!
amirisu: Please let me know if you have any recommended shops or places near your home (I dream of the days when I can travel freely).
Kiyomi: I live in Toronto, Canada, and my neighborhood is full of interesting shops and places, including some nice yarn and craft stores. One of my favorites is the vintage clothing and one-of-a-kind shop Courage My Love, located in trendy Kensington Market. This shop has been around for a long time and sells everything from jewelry to fine beads and buttons. It's a very fun shop, so I'm looking forward to the day I can go again.
