What, if any, challenges did you encounter during the design process? I really wanted the cable in this sweater to be nice and big, so my biggest challenge was seeing how wide I could make the cable before it was too difficult to work, and before it started to distort the fabric around it. The solution was short rows within the cable, creating extra fabric at the cable cross.
If you were to knit this design in another color, what would it be? I already knit another one, in black! Black is my favourite basic colour to wear so I knit my designs in black quite often. This time I went up a size, and didn’t work the decreases at the cuffs to experiment with a different silhouette.
What made you decide to become a designer? Almost as soon as I started knitting garments, I started designing my own pieces. Thinking about what kinds of interesting designs I could come up with within the medium of knitting made me feel much more creatively fulfilled than if I was just making clothes for myself. It became more of an expressive and experimental practice instead of just making clothes.
Among the patterns you’ve designed so far, which one is your favorite? MIy favourite is the Contradiction sweater. I like the asymmetry and how it looks like it was cut and sewn back together, and I think it looks quite cool.
