It's understandable to feel anxious about knitting without knowing the final shape, but that's the fun of a Mystery KAL. There's no need to strive for perfection. Since it's a shawl, it's fine even if the shape changes a little, as long as it can be wrapped around your neck! Once you wear it, you won't really notice the colors much. The most important thing is to have fun! We hope this Mystery KAL will be an opportunity for you to embark on more free-spirited knitting.

[Basic Questions]
What is a KAL?
It's short for "Knit Along." It's an event where everyone knits together on a common theme for a set period.
What is a Mystery KAL?
Since it's a mystery, it's a KAL where you knit without knowing the final shape. The pattern is divided and released gradually over several weeks. Participants knit along, relying on the "Clues" that arrive each week. For this amirisu Mystery KAL, the pattern will be delivered in 5 parts from September 18th to October 16th, 2026. All we know at first is that the project will be a shawl, and it will use one color of DK weight yarn and one color of Fingering weight yarn (with an optional ball of Flutter). Knit along with excitement, wondering what will come next!
How do I participate?
Purchase the pattern from the amirisu online shop. Once you have the pattern and your preferred yarn, you're ready to go. You don't need to announce your participation on social media, but if you want to get into the festive spirit, we recommend posting your progress on Instagram or Ravelry, or checking out what others are doing.
However, participants' progress will vary. For those who enjoy the unknown, please use the image below as your first cover photo when posting.
Can I participate without buying a yarn set?
We also sell recommended yarn sets from amirisu, but you don't have to buy a set; you can use yarn you already have! It doesn't have to be yarn purchased from amirisu. Please use any yarn you like.
Is it suitable for beginners?
We will include easy-to-follow knitting videos, so we believe you can do it if you have the motivation!
However, all patterns are written. There are no charts. It might be difficult for those new to written patterns. If you're concerned, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with Japanese written patterns beforehand. We also offer free patterns for mittens and scarves for beginners of written patterns. Alternatively, search "Japanese written pattern" in our online shop to find other patterns you like.
Is it okay if I don't finish during the KAL period?
It's perfectly fine if you don't finish. Knit at your own pace without pushing yourself.
However, since everyone knits together during the KAL period, it can motivate you to work harder and progress faster. If you have the time, we recommend trying to finish during the period. Once the period ends, many photos of completed works will be posted on Instagram, so be careful if you don't want spoilers.
【About Yarn, Color Combinations, and Yarn Sets】
Do you have any tips for combining colors?
There's no right answer for color combinations, so choose colors you like.
The colors don't need to have a strong contrast, but I think you'll enjoy it more if there's a slight difference in color.
Should the yarn materials be consistent?
Yarns blended with alpaca, yak, or cotton are fine, but it's easier to knit with wool-dominant yarns.
Can I change the yarn weight?
For beginners, we recommend knitting with DK weight and Fingering weight as per the pattern. However, since it's a shawl, a slight change in size or shape isn't a big issue, so you can use other weights if you prefer. In that case, please be mindful of the yarn quantity.
The set I wanted is sold out. Is there a possibility of it being restocked?
There is a possibility of restock, but we cannot provide definitive information on the restock period or quantity. Therefore, how about purchasing similar individual yarns and creating your own unique combination?
Can I change colors midway through?
No problem. If you don't like it, it might be fun to keep adding new yarns. Unlike garments, the great thing about shawls is that you can be adventurous with colors.
Can I get advice on color selection at the store?
Yes, you can. Please feel free to visit. However, please understand that some staff members may not know the final shape of the shawl, and those who do cannot reveal spoilers.
I started to dislike my color combination midway through. I'm not happy with it. What should I do?
There are several solutions.
① Don't be afraid to unravel it and knit with different colors. You can re-knit as many times as you need until you're satisfied.
② It's difficult to choose the ideal colors without knowing the final shape. If you absolutely want to avoid failure, wait until the KAL ends, see the finished product, and then choose your favorite colors. This might reduce the excitement, but you should be able to choose colors you're happy with.
③ How about adding more and more colors? This is recommended for those who like Stephen West's knits. The more colors you add, the more surprisingly cohesive it becomes, creating a truly unique shawl.

What shape will the shawl be?
It won't be triangular or round; it will have an irregular shape.
【Others】
What length should the circular needle cord be?
A length of 80cm or more is easier to knit with.
Can I knit with straight needles?
No, you cannot. Please use circular needles with a flexible cord.
How much should I worry about gauge?
Since it's a shawl, you don't need to worry too much about it. However, if the amount of yarn you have is just barely enough, please be careful as you might run out.

We cannot check everything, and there are no specific penalties.
