Aalto Vest by Veera Välimäki

Aalto Vest by Veera Välimäki

Featured in amirisu Issue 26, published in 2023.

Today we're interviewing Veera, one of the Finland-based designers who joined us for this issue. For Issue 26 she designed a subtle striped vest named after Aino Aalto, wife of Alvar Aalto, who also happens to one of Meri's favorite architects. We talk with Veera about her design and ask about some of her favorite places in Finland, too.

amirisu: What was your inspiration for this design?
Veera: My inspiration for the Aalto Vest design was the book Aino A. by Jari Järvelä, a biography novel about the life of Aino Aalto, an architect and wife of the famous Alvar Aalto. Obviously also all the architecture and designs by this famous couple.

amirisu: What, if any, challenges did you encounter during the design process?
Veera: With the design I had my doubts about the contrast color, but in the end I love the lower contrast between the lilac and the off-white.

amirisu: If you were to knit this design in another color, what would it be?
Veera: I'm already thinking about a high contrast version! Maybe with dark blue MC with white stripes.

amirisu: How did you start your knitting journey?
Veera: My knitting journey started as a kid, and I've been knitting ever since. More seriously, once I needed an easy craft to keep me company when my kids were young.

amirisu: How do you like to spend time in the summer? What do you like to knit or make in warmer months?
Veera: Summer is all for swimming, tennis and running for me! But knitting continues throughout the year and I often keep knitting with heavier wool even during summer.

amirisu: Tell us a little about one or two of your favorite spots to recommend to someone thinking to visit Finland.
Veera: I can highly recommend the west coast of Finland, especially Yyteri beach near the city Pori and quite close by you can find one of the most famous buildings in Finland, Villa Mairea, designed by Alvar Aalto.

Thank you, Veera!
