After moving to Japan I was sometimes asked whether there were four seasons in Germany, where I come from. “Of course”, I usually replied, a little puzzled by that question. Only over the course of the many years I lived in Japan I fully understood how much attention people there pay on seasonal changes throughout the year and how much nature is cherished this way. First cherry blossoms in spring, the first sound of cicadas in summer... On a hot day in mid July during my last year in Japan I went out to an early morning lotus flower
viewing event and was enchanted by those natural showers made of lotus leaves - a freshening appreciation of summer.
