Through the Lens for amirisu by Shari Altman

In the fall, after we experience our first overnight frost, the world begins to slow down. We work on putting the garden to bed. Nights come early, and we begin to heat the house with our woodstove. We make large pots of bubbling soup with the last remnants from the garden (leek, potato, sage, and kale) along with fresh loaves of seeded bread. We light candles for extra light, and we retire earlier. Our chickens stop laying because they, too, need the rest. The wheel of the year continues to turn – an extra comfort when so much else in our world is changing.
