Hand Painted Yuzen experience and Craft Shopping walk in Kyoto

amirisu is excited to offer an authentic art & craft experience for the creative traveler who wants to dig deeper into the textile culture of Kyoto. The one-day experience-based tour will include a hand painted Yuzen lesson at a long-established atelier and a traditional Japanese embroidery ‘Kogin’ workshop at amirisu.

Our guide has a decade of experience in the handicraft business in Kyoto and will take you to the hidden, inspiring shops recommended by amirisu staff to get some of the finest materials made in Japan. Why not add this special tour to your wish list in Kyoto!

The first workshop at amirisu will be in Kogin embroidery, which is one of the traditional Japanese techniques born in the north of Japan. These geometric, but cozy, designs are still attractive in modern life and are becoming popular among the younger generation today. We will make wrapped buttons using the fabric you embroider, which can accent your original accessories. Alternately, framed, it will make a lovely souvenir to decorate your home. After the workshop, enjoy shopping at amirisu’s store! The friendly staff is happy to help you find the right yarn, patterns, or fabric for your next project.

After lunch at amirisu, we will visit the imperially recognized Kyo-Yuzen atelier ‘Tomihiro Senko’. Yuzen dyeing is the traditional dyeing technique of painting dye directly on to silk cloth. Kyo-yuzen originating from Kyoto is the most lavish of all Yuzen types and it can be distinguished by the generous use of gold and silver leaf and embroidery. At Tomihiro Senko, they offer you a precious opportunity to see the manufacturing process of hand dyeing on Kimono by skilled artisans, which is simply overwhelming. The artisan will also teach you how to paint on a cloth to create your own original Fukusa (Japanese silk handkerchief used in ceremonies). They will finish(dry) them in the atelier and we will arrange shipment to you within a month after the tour. (Shipping costs will be charged separately by PayPal.)

After the workshop, we will go out for a craft shopping walk! Please join this tour with comfortable shoes, we will walk about 10~20 minutes between each shop.

We will visit shops including …

Someori by sou.sou

Sou.sou is a Japanese original textile brand and they have created modern textile by making the most of traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques. Many of their motifs have come from Japanese life and seasonal landscape, which is very unique.

Someori is the only shop you can buy sousou original fabrics.

Misuya-bari is a traditional Japanese sewing needle store established 400 years ago. They sell various types of high-quality needles made in Japan. The friendly owner will give you advice to select your favorite. Their beautiful sewing kit is definitely one of the perfect souvenirs from Kyoto.

You will find lots of inspiration and beautiful materials for your creations from this 1-day craft tour in Kyoto.
